Going by the definition, it might seem like a simple idea, but there is an important implication for forex trading that comes from this concept.
Break-even comes from the Break-Even Point BEP. Well, in terms of price action, it refers to the point where gains equal losses. Simple, right? Join our responsible trading community - Open your Orbex account now! We have to take into account risk, because accounting for risk is part of the losses side of this equation that many people forget. How does that work? When you enter the market, you get a difference from the price action which is the spread.
If the market is at 1. And the sell price is two pips lower, to account for the spread. But, a rule of thumb is to calculate how likely you were to lose on that trade. In other words, if you iterate your trades over a long enough period, you will lose 30 pips on average per trade, while gaining an average of 70 pips per trade. It will help if the trader is using a new trading strategy; it will help determine the number of trades required to profit when the stop-loss and target settings are optimized.
The trader winning a more significant percentage of trades than the break-even will profit, while a trader losing a more substantial number of trades compared to break-even will make a loss. The win rate calculates the number of trades that the trader is winning, expressed in percentage terms.
Traders should be aware that setting targets that cannot really produce break-even percentages is misleading because they are not realistic. A trader may feel tempted to set the target significantly higher than the stop-loss, thinking that he will require only a few winning trades to break even under these conditions. Yet, the trader is not aware of the reality of achieving difficult targets. If the target is extremely high, the trader will never achieve it since the prices or value of the security will not increase to a very great extent in most cases.
In other cases, there will only be very few winning trades for high targets, so the trader will lose money since the percentage of losing trades will be more. So while developing a trading strategy or system, the trader should first determine the target profit, stop-loss levels that are realistic, easily achieved, and then calculate the break-even levels.
Though most beginners are happy to break even when they start trading, traders should be aware that their goal is to make a reasonable profit since they are spending time and taking the risk of investing their money.

Sizwe South Africa. Hello John, When are you saying we should move our stop losses to breakeven? Thank you. Hi Kl, this is something you need to work out as part of your trading rules and trading plan. For example; you take your first normal profit and then move to breakeven on a last portion of profit to see if it will run for bigger profits, All the success, Johnathon. Hello John, Thank you for the clarification.
We all want to be on the plus side in Forex. But how do we assess our profitability? In most cases, we compare the amount of incurred losses with that of profit. However, this indicator alone cannot be sufficient motivation.
We risk falling into one of the psychological traps in case of a series of losing trades. After a series of failures, our desire to make a profit recover our losses becomes so strong that it causes more and more losses.
Often, it results in an increased emotional charge, and trading based on emotions and going for broke leads to great losses. One way of releasing emotional charge in trading may be moving Stop Loss to breakeven. Breakeven is such a price level relative to an open trade where there is neither profit nor loss. In other words, breakeven is a situation when the price has come back to the point of opening a trade.
They forget that every single trade is just an opportunity to make money, and success of a trader depends not on one trade, but on the aggregate of all own trades. It is really important to move Stop Loss to the breakeven level when a trade has a good floating profit. This will help you to keep your capital safe and avoid a troubling situation when a winning trade turns into a losing one.
Breakeven is just a tool, which needs to be properly used. This is why you need to carefully consider this tool and the possibility of its integration into your trading strategy.
In general, if your next trade is neither winning nor losing, take a break and get some rest, because the near-zero result or closing a trade at breakeven is a positive result in the long run in Forex. It is also important to take into account the peculiarities of your trading system when moving Stop Loss to breakeven.
In the midst of all of this, several situations where you should move Stop Loss to the breakeven level may be distinguished:. This can play a low-down trick with you when a winning trade closes with enormous loss due to slippage or spread widening. Related Articles. What's Next? Learn basic Sentiment Strategy Setups.
